stratum slab o1

72” x 29” | S O L D

This piece is a composition of plaster and resin on unfinished birch board. I first poured plaster in rivulet-like channels into which I later poured resin. The white chalky bands of plaster with a sinewy lines contrast with the glassy, water-like streams of colored resin, creating a constantly changing topographically stratified landscape. I designed the color palette so that every grouping of 4-5 bands would work together as its own distinct family but also work within the larger palette of the whole.

The concept for the Stratum Slab series was inspired by my interest in maps, as well as, the long, layered, East/West, mountain-to-ocean views common across California and San Diego, in particular. Because my neighborhood is perfectly situated in the undulating low-lying hills between the warm toned, bright, and rugged high desert and the cool toned, soft, gradual ocean coast, I can typically see for miles in both directions. As I move between these environments in different seasons and times of day, my eye is drawn to these endless, multi-layered bands of morphing horizons on display.

This piece is currently on the cafe wall at @THEBRAND in Glendale, California.
